Storylines

Will Coleman starts as the one to beat

Off The Record is the Prediction Center favorite on 27% to win and 55% for the podium. His Elo of 793 is 113 clear of the next horse. Last year he set the Morven dressage record (25.1), led after cross-country, then had one rail and lost by 0.4.

Boyd defends the title

Boyd has won two of the last three here: Commando 3 in 2023 and Miks Master C in 2025, and he won both the Series and the Final last year. Luke 140 won The Fork CCI4*-S in September, his first run of 2026, and has jumped clear in all four of his 4*-L and 5* show jumping rounds. Boyd also rides Fetiche Des Rouges, a CCI4*-L debutant.

Danito should be at or near the top after dressage

Tamie Smith's horse has the best 6RA in the field (25.9) and set the Series dressage record of 19.5 at Tryon in May. Tamie won the 2026 Series and won here in 2022. The doubt is the jumping: 1 SJ jumping clear from 4 starts at this level.

Dyri has never had a jumping fault here

Lucienne Bellissimo's horse is 2/2 clear across country and 2/2 clear show jumping at Morven: 4th in 2023, 2nd in 2024. He is 2nd in the field on 6RA and 10% to win.

Three rides for Caroline Pamukcu

HSH Connor, HSH Tolan King and HSH Sebastian. HSH Connor is the one the model likes most: 6% to win and 5th favorite, with a 6RA of 28.9 (6th). His XC clear chance of 60% is 30th of 39. HSH Sebastian is making his CCI4*-L debut.

The clock is the hardest part of Morven

Since 2021, 11 of 106 cross-country starters here have jumped clear inside the time (10%). Will Coleman is the only rider to have done it more than once: Off The Record and Very Dignified, both in 2025. Only 51 of 106 jumped clear at all.

The strongest field Morven has ever had

Elo field strength averages the top 25 horses. This field rates 556, up from 520 for the first Final and 466 the year before. Nine of the top ten horses in the field are American; Fernhill Salt Lake is the Canadian in there.

Win from the front

Every Morven CCI4*-L winner since 2021 was in the top six after dressage, on average 2.8. Four of the five cross-country leaders went on to win. The exception was Off The Record last year.

Final-day form

Only 24 of 69 show jumping rounds here since 2021 have been clear inside the time (35%), and last year it was 4 of 22. Imperio Magic is the only horse in the field with 4/4 SJ clears inside the time at 4*-L and 5*.

For the booth

“The mission of the US Equestrian Open is to grow and foster a deeper connection to equestrian sport by delivering a premier, unified championship series that engages a broader fanbase through top-level competition, storytelling, and a dynamic, entertaining experience.”

What the Open is

  • A season-long series of CCI4*-S Qualifiers across the country, finishing with one CCI4*-L Final. Twenty Qualifiers this year, from Bouckaert in October 2025 to Woodside on October 3.
  • Frank & Eileen present the Leading Lady Award to the top-placed female rider in the Series. Tamie Smith won it for the 2026 season.
  • This is the second Final. The first was also here at Morven Park.

Prize money

  • $200,000 prize purse for the Final, the largest at CCI4*-L anywhere in the world, shared across the placings rather than going to one rider.
  • The Series champion collects $25,000, presented at this year’s Final. In 2025 it was presented on the Wednesday, after the first horse inspection.
  • The winner’s name goes on the perpetual US Equestrian Open trophy. Boyd Martin is the first name on it.

Tamie won five 2026 Qualifiers: Lillet 3 at Carolina and Kentucky, Jump To Day D at Ocala, Danito at Tryon and Twin Rivers. Only Danito is here. Best six results count. The twentieth and last Qualifier, Woodside on October 3, went to Erin Kellerhouse and Ringwood Adios Amigo on 60.0, with Tamie 2nd on Spiro P; neither horse is in this field.

Qualifier winners in this field

  • Dyri: Bouckaert (Oct 2025) and Stable View (Apr 2026, 27.7). Top points earner of the 2026 Series.
  • Danito: Tryon (May, 27.9, after a 19.5 dressage) and Twin Rivers (Sep).
  • HSH Connor: Bouckaert (Mar). Lovedance: Maryland International (Jun). Luke 140: The Fork (Sep). Imperio Magic: Stable View (Sep).
  • Off The Record won the 2025 Series Qualifier at Kentucky (33.0) and was 2nd at Tryon in May this year.

Quick drops

  • Decided by 0.4 of a penalty. Last year’s Final: Boyd Martin and Miks Master C 28.7, Will Coleman and Off The Record 29.1 after one rail at B of the triple, last to go.
  • Two inside the XC time in one day. Will Coleman is the only rider to make the Morven cross-country time twice in one running (Off The Record and Very Dignified, 2025). Three horses made it from 27 starters.
  • One finish on dressage. Very Dignified was the only horse to finish the 2025 Final on her dressage score, climbing from 6th to 3rd on the last day without adding a thing.
  • The model called the top two. The EquiRatings Prediction Center named joint favorites last year on 19% each, Miks Master C and Off The Record. They finished first and second.
  • The strongest field Morven has ever had. Elo field strength (average of the top 25 horses) is 556, against 520 in 2025, 466 in 2024, 454 in 2023, 418 in 2022 and 405 in 2021. Only The Fork at Tryon in November 2020 (605) has been stronger among CCI4*-Ls on US soil in the last ten years.
  • The course designers. Derek di Grazia designs the cross-country, as he does at Kentucky. Last year’s track was 5,778 meters with an optimum time of 10:09. Christopher Barnard built the 2025 show jumping track in the Grand Prix Arena.
  • “Our Badminton.” Sharon White on the venue: “It could be our Badminton, and now it has a chance to showcase.”
  • Both Finals. Laine Ashker is the only rider to have competed in both the Eventing Final and the Dressage Final (Desert Horse Park, November 2025).

Questions to ask

Press conference

  • Last year three horses made the cross-country time from 27. Tell us about the unique challenge of Morven Park. We have a stronger field on paper; do you expect more inside the time on Saturday?
  • Every winner here since 2021 was in the top six after dressage. Is this a competition you can win from the middle of the field?
  • For a fan who has never watched eventing, what is the one thing to watch for on each of the three days?

Will Coleman

  • Timmy was last to go, one rail at B of the triple, and lost by 0.4. How often have you thought about that fence in the last twelve months?
  • You made the cross-country time on both horses last year. Is that track suited to him, or was that a decision on the day?
  • He's 17 and the top rated US horse from EquiRatings. How many more of these does he have, and how do you plan his season around them?

Boyd Martin

  • Luke 140 won first time out this year at The Fork. What did that run tell you about where he is coming into this week?
  • You've won two of the last three here and both the Series and the Final last year. Different horse this time. What changes?
  • Fetiche Des Rouges steps up to his first CCI4*-L. What do you want from him this week?
  • Nobody made the cross-country time at The Fork last month, and his expected XC time here is among the higher ones in the field. Is Saturday about the clock or about jumping clean?

Tamie Smith

  • 265 points, a record Series. Does the Series title change how you ride the Final, or is the pressure the same?
  • Danito's 19.5 at Tryon was the best test anywhere in 2026. Can you repeat something like that here?
  • He has one show jumping clear from four starts at this level. What is the plan for Sunday?
  • You won here in 2022 with Solaguayre California. What do you remember about riding this track?

Lucienne Bellissimo

  • Dyri has never had a jumping fault at Morven and has never finished outside the top five here. Why does this place suit him?
  • You dropped him down the levels after Kentucky 2025 and rebuilt. What did you change?
  • First Final riding for the USA. What has the switch meant for you?

Caroline Pamukcu

  • Three horses in one Final. How do you manage the week, and which one are you most excited about?
  • HSH Connor won Bouckaert in March. What do you need from him on the flat to be in the hunt?
  • HSH Tolan King was the horse that wouldn't sell for $20,000. Where is he now compared to where you thought he'd be?

Others worth catching

  • Mia Farley: Invictus was bred and raised by Karen O'Connor in Middleburg, a few miles from here. What does it mean to bring him to this one? You've been working with Peter Wylde on the show jumping; what's changed?
  • Sharon White: you led the dressage here in 2022 and were second after dressage last year, and neither week went to plan. What is different about Claus this year? You've been coming to Morven since you were 15; why could it be "our Badminton"?
  • Mary Bess Davis: you stepped away for eight years, bought Imperio Magic unseen, and he is 4/4 clear inside the time in show jumping at this level. What does Sunday look like if you're in range?
  • Waylon Roberts: two of the fastest horses in the field. Is Canada's plan to attack the clock on Saturday?
  • Laine Ashker: you've ridden in both Open Finals, dressage and eventing. How different are the two weeks?
  • Tracey Bienemann: a $1 racehorse at a $200,000 Final. Tell the story.
  • Kim Severson: a 9-year-old on his first CCI4*-L. What does he remind you of?
